The goal of the study was to determine if patients with respiratory failure due to COVID-19 admitted to ICU had an a) increased incidence of barotrauma in both ventilated and non-ventilated patients, b) was barotrauma associated with worse outcome (mortality, LOS in ICU and LOS in the hospital). Additionally, there have been reports of barotrauma in patients with COVID-19 requiring high flow nasal cannula or non-invasive ventilatory support. However, these studies only included patients on invasive mechanical ventilation. A recent study showed an increased incidence of barotrauma in patients with COVID-19 related ARDS, as well as associations with increased mortality and hospital length of stay (LOS). Interestingly, patients with acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19 have been observed to have higher rates of barotrauma. Since the institution of lung-protective ventilatory strategies outlined in the ARDSnet protocols, the prevalence of barotrauma in patients with ARDS is reported at 4–11%. Lung protective strategies are essential to prevent barotrauma. Determinants of barotrauma include transpulmonary pressures, tidal volume and presence and degree of dynamic hyperinflation. The diagnosis of barotrauma is both clinical and radiological, with complications ranging from pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, to subcutaneous emphysema. Of these, ventilator-induced lung injury and barotrauma have been of increasing interest. Given the significant rise in the caseload of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and widespread requirement of ventilatory support, the consequences of invasive ventilation and disease-specific factors are of particular importance. Since December 31, 2019, when China reported a series of cases of acute respiratory failure caused by a new species of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, more than 50 million new cases, and almost 1,260,000 deaths have been confirmed worldwide. Since this is the only number below this diagonal, the first sum is 6. This number is bounded by the corner of the lattice and the first diagonal. We start at the bottom half of the lower right corner cell (6). We sum the numbers between every pair of diagonals and also between the first (and last) diagonal and the corresponding corner of the lattice. Now we are ready to calculate the digits of the product. If the product is less than 10, we enter a zero above the diagonal. The tens digit of the product is placed above the diagonal that passes through the cell, and the units digit is put below that diagonal. Now we calculate a product for each cell by multiplying the digit at the top of the column and the digit at the right of the row. īefore the actual multiplication can begin, lines must be drawn for every diagonal path in the lattice from upper right to lower left to bisect each cell. IllustratedĪbove is the lattice configuration for computing. Header for one row of cells (the most significant digit is put at the top). Is placed along the right side of the lattice so that each digit is a (trailing) Of cells (the most significant digit is put at the left). Is placed along the top of the lattice so that each digit is the header for one column If we are multiplying an -digit number by an -digit number, the size of the lattice is. In this approach, a lattice is first constructed, sized to fit the numbersīeing multiplied. The lattice method is an alternative to long multiplication for numbers. To me the food processor works the best: it’s the quickest, which means less work for you, less opportunities for the butter to melt into the flour and a smaller chance of overworking the dough. I’ve tried making several different recipes, I’ve made it by hand, using a pastry dough blender, and using a food processor. Why use a food processor to make pie crust You’ll also notice your mistake when you’re cutting out your ribbons for creating a pretty lattice: if your already rolled out dough is not very cold, the cuts won’t be so clean, the slightly elastic dough might get stuck to your knife or pizza cutter and pull a bit, in a stringy way. Not with a pie crust, you want it to be short, flaky, crumbly. If it happens, you’ll notice when you’re rolling out your dough, it might shrink back a tiny bit as you try to roll it out thinner, which means you’ve activated the gluten in the dough, just like when making bread dough! Difference is in bread that’s exactly what you want, you want to create elasticity in the dough. Even if you succeed in that task, be careful when you’re patting the disks together before chilling them in the fridge too: patting them too much could mean you’re also overworking it. My most common mistake has always been overworking the dough, even when I’m being very careful not to! You want to leave lots of little pieces of butter still whole scattered throughout the dough, which means you have to work quickly enough to not let it melt into the flour. It’s flour, sugar, salt, very cold butter cut into small pieces (sometimes some chilled vegetable shortening) and a little bit of ice water, right? The method though, that’s what can really make it or break it. There’s not a world of differences between pie crust recipes, if you really stop to compare them. It’s irresistible on its own and just heavenly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The border is sprinkled with turbinado sugar, which adds to the texture with a slight crunch. Allow to cool and serve warm or at room temperature. This Caramel Apple Galette is so simple and unpretentious, the crust is so flaky and the filling is just sweet enough, with the added flavor of the caramel made from the juices of the apples. Loosen the tarts with a metal spatula so they don't stick to the paper. Don't worry! The apple juices will burn in the pan but the tarts will be fine! When the tarts are done, heat the apricot jelly together with the Calvados until bubbly and brush the apples and pastry completely with the jelly mixture. Sprinkle the apples evenly with the sugar and dot them with the butter.īake for 40 minutes, until the pastry is browned and the edges of the apples start to brown. Place overlapping slices of apples diagonally across the pastry and place one slice of apple on each side of the arranged slices. Slice the apples crosswise in 1/4-inch-thick slices. Remove the stems and cores with a sharp knife and a melon baller. Peel the apples and cut them in half through the stem. Divide the pastry between the prepared sheet pans and refrigerate while you prepare the apples. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper.Ĭut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 squares. The holder of the dix has the right to exchange it, upon winning a trick, for the trump card. He may count the dix and make another meld in same turn. Thereafter, a player holding a dix may count it by showing it upon winning a trick. MELDING “DIX” – If dealer turns a dix as a trump, he scores 10 points. Melding Rules: Only one meld per turn, at least one card must be taken from hand and placed on table per meld, a card may be melded again but in a different class or higher scoring meld of the same class. Player makes meld by placing cards face up on table. MELDING – Upon winning a trick (before drawing from stock) a player may meld any combinations that have value. After each trick, each player draws a card from the top of stock to restore hand to 12 cards. Leader may lead any card and opponent may play any card. When another suit is led, the card led wins (unless a higher card of the same suit or a trump is played). When trump is led, it wins the trick (unless a higher trump is played). Non-Dealer leads then winner of each trick leads. PLAY – Each trick consists of a lead and a play. The Queen of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds constitute the pinochle meld of Pinochle. OBJECT OF THE GAME – Goal is to win tricks so as to score the value of counting cards taken on tricks, and to meld certain combinations of cards having point values. Remainder of pack forms the stock and is placed faced down and should cover half of the trump card. The next card is turned up and placed on the table this is the trump card. THE DEAL – Dealer gives 12 cards to each player, non-dealer first, dealt three or four cards at a time. When duplicates are played to same trick (as two Q♠) the first played hand ranks higher. RANK OF CARDS – A (high), 10, K, Q, J, 9 (low) in each of the four suits, with two of each card. THE DECK – A 48-card Pinochle pack is used. This is the basic version designed for two players. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!.Personally, though, we think she looks fine, and this is far, far from the most shocking wardrobe choice made by a SoraNews24 reporter, so she gets a thumbs-up from us. Well, that and her lingering self-consciousness, since while she likes the way she looks, she’s still not 100-percent sure about wearing these fashions at her age. ▼ We’re not sure if the combination of Seiji’s willingness to help out with other people’s projects and his unwillingness to finish his own makes him industrious or lazy, but it does make him one of us.Īs for the skirt, length-wise it doesn’t really work all that well with the dress, and so Ikuna is going to have to find something else in her closet to pair it with, but that’s really the only problem she ran into. Sure, there’s a bit more flashiness here, but again, the elegant black-and-white motif for the non-ursine elements suit an adult lady just fine.Īs a matter of fact, Ikuna’s fashion transformation was going so smoothly that fellow reporter Seiji Nakazawa volunteered as cameraman for an extended photo shoot, since he’s a supportive coworker, has a personal soft spot for frilly fashions, and, like a number of reporters in our office on any given day, was looking for excuses to not have to do his own work. Ikuna had similar success with the teddy bear top. …and so far, so good! While there’s definitely a youthful, traditional girlishness to Ank Rouge’s designs, the understated colors of the pieces meant they didn’t look out of place on a woman of Ikuna’s mature sophistication. She started by slipping on the dress and jacket… They all looked cute, but the question Ikuna wanted to answer was whether or not they’d look cute on her. …and, finally, a miniskirt with shoulder straps. …a blouse with a frilly collar and a ribbon… …another frilly collar, this time as part of a teddy bear-print top… …a dress (with frilly collar, of course) and skirt… There was a short black coat (with included a hair ribbon, of course)… And finally, if she started to feel embarrassed while at the register, she could just say she was picking up the fukubukuro for her niece or something.īack at the office and away from the public’s eyes, Ikuna opened up her lucky bag and spread out its six items, which were exactly the sort of styles she’d been expecting and hoping for. In addition, since it already contains a complete ensemble, she wouldn’t have to feel awkward spending an extended time browsing a store where every other shopper is younger than her by a decade or more. ▼ Yes, even the Ank Rouge lucky bag has frills.įor starters, the blind-buy lucky bag represents a savings, since the total value of its contents is more than the bag’s 16,500-yen (US$143) asking price. So when she found out that Ank Rouge was offering a New Year’s fukubukuro/lucky bag, she figured this was the perfect opportunity to find out. Ikuna’s been wanting to try the brand’s styles for herself, but at the same time, she’s a little self-conscious about whether she, a woman in her 30s, can pull off such a youthful look. “Their clothes are like a blend of classic cuteness with a dash of gothic Lolita style,”Ikuna describes the brand, “with all sorts of frills and ribbons.” SoraNews24 headquarters is located in the Shinjuku neighborhood, and a side effect of working in the heart of downtown Tokyo is that we get regular updates on current fashion trends just by walking to the office. Recently, our Japanese-language reporter Ikuna Kamezawa has been noticing bigger and bigger crowds of teen and early-20s shoppers at Ank Rouge. Ikuna takes a chance on a lucky bag she’s in the market, but not the target market, for. Indian Paintbrush is a favorite for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making them a favorite in gardens that hope to attract friendly pollinators. Indian Paintbrush also features seasonal blooms that tend to be red or yellow-tipped, but they’re less showy than the bracts and easily missed. We say bracts instead of blooms because technically, the bright-colored ends to the plants are a type of modified leaves rather than petals. That means that it takes two years to complete a growing cycle, after which the plant will die. This plant is also known as Scarlett Painted Cup or Prairie Fire, thanks to its red, orange, and yellow bracts. They were also used by several tribes to make a red dye.Indian Paintbrush ( Castilleja Coccinea) creates colorful wildflowers native to prairies and grasslands throughout North and South America. Other tribes in Nevada historically used it to treat STDs and to boost the immune system. Menominee used it as a love charm, and the Navajos used it as a contraceptive. Ojibwa tribes (where I grew up on the reservation in Wisconsin) have used the flowers for both rheumatism and for creating a hair wash for thick, shiny hair. In moderation + small amounts, the flower benefits are similar to eating garlic! The greens and roots of the plant were not eaten, however, because they absorb too much selenium from the environment. Its flowers are edible and were eaten by some Native American tribes. Indian Paintbrush is hemiparasitic, meaning that it survives symbiotically by using some of the nutrients and water from nearby roots of grasses and herbaceous plants. Although the Crastilleja family has flowers in red, orange, yellow, pink, green, purple and white, the miniata variety is fluorescent red-literally an impossible neon color! The Indian Paintbrush flower ( Castilleja chromosa) is also known as Painted Lady, Prairie Fire and Butterfly Weed. It enhances determination and conviction once we’re "back on track." It shakes the rug out from under our feet so that we can restabilize ourselves in a new way. Getting "lost" provides just enough spaciousness and "not knowing" that it unravels preconceived notions or rigidity, along with old patterns and old ways of doing things. It can simply mean that we are rewriting an old/new story or disassembling to reassemble in a new way. Just because we feel lost, doesn’t actually mean that we are lost. We feel inspired to keep going.Īlso, sometimes we forget that feeling lost can be a valuable part of learning. We feel supported and accompanied by our surroundings. We feel calmer and more comfortable within the uncomfortable sensations of forging a new path in our life. Indian Paintbrush helps us embrace our own innate special qualities as well as our inner knowingness. We’re more able to take breaks to sit quietly and really listen, tuning in so that we can pinpoint our next step. We feel the synchronicity of life it seems magic is all around us. We have more comfort in our abilities and we can feel or intuit our way through a situation (especially situations we’ve never been in before) and handle it like a pro. We are more able to listen and tune into benevolent supportive forces of nature, feeling confident and assured about the direction we’re going in. We are shown signs and indications of being on the right track. Indian Paintbrush elixir magnifies clarity of our path. The process of finding your way-or finding a new way-can be a little unnerving. It can stimulate slight panic or fear about whether or not you’re capable of maneuvering through these new, uncharted waters. Pioneering a new way can trigger doubts, over-analyzing or a sense of feeling lost. If you are attracted to the Indian Paintbrush, you are most likely taking a new direction in a certain area of your life, creating a new plan of attack (so to speak) or forging a new path. I ended up getting lost for a while, eventually finding my way. I was inspired to go off trail and wandered around in the piñon trees where only Javelinas stroll. Last spring when I was on this hike, I saw the most fluorescent neon Indian Paintbrush flower I’d ever seen. When you reach the top, there’s a plateau, perfect for resting, walking around, looking out over the green and red valley or sitting down to meditate. There’s one huge rock that looks like the back of the Buddha’s head off in the distance as you’re walking up. It’s also full of green, from the piñon and juniper trees, making a beautiful contrast against the red rocks. It’s a hike that’s not very well known with tourists, so it’s quiet. I was on one of my favorite hikes in Sedona during springtime. |
